Who Should be the NEXT Los Angeles Galaxy Manager?

You are right, Guillermo Barros Schelotto has not been sacked. But the way this team is trending, it is only a matter of time.
It is a little unfortunate because our expectations for him were high considering he was coming off of leading Boca Juniors to a CONCACAF Champions League Final. The best we were ever given (so far) in his tenure are these short win and undefeated streaks. Although, this season the undefeated streak is the ONLY time we have won, 5 matches unbeaten, 4 matches won, the ONLY matches won this season (so far…I hope we get more).

It is time to move on.

Here are some candidates I believe could turn around the team, the club, and the organization and give us fans what we deserve.

Eddie Howe
-Former AFC Bournemouth Manager
After over 10 years with the club, he decided to mutually part ways with the club after a season that ended in Bournemouth being relegated to the Championship. So why is a good choice? He was able to turn this club around and promote them from League One to the Premier League. Howe was able to lead a team with mixed talent from young to experienced, which is exactly what the LA Galaxy Need. The Galaxy do not have an all star team and neither did Bournemouth, yet Howe was able to bring out the best in many of his players consistently. Consistency is one of the key things missing in this LA Galaxy team.

Landon Donovan
-Current San Diego Loyal Manager
I know, I know. “He doesn’t have enough experience… blah blah blah.” This is very true, BUT he has plenty of experience when it comes to MLS and high pressure cases. He is our all time leading goalscorer, a legend at the club. Maybe it is too soon for him to become the LA Galaxy manager, maybe it can taint his resume if this does not turn out well, still I think his experience in the league and with the club will bring back something special. Donovan is one of the few available candidates that understands what it means to be an LA Galaxy player. That needs to be engrained in this squad as there is no player in this squad that seems to understand it or just does not hold themselves responsible to the badge on their chest.

Robbie Keane
-Assistant Manager at Middlesbrough When Robbie Keane joined the Los Angeles Galaxy, it was mostly an underwhelming signing as he was not a really exciting striker at the time. Yet, he came into this club and became one of the best strikers we have ever had in this club and in this league. He is well deserving of a statue in our Legends plaza. Like Landon Donovan, Keane understands the burden you have to carry when playing for this club. Though inexperienced as a manager, his experience as an assistant manager with the Republic of Ireland and now Middlesbrough, he is getting a better understanding of how to manage players at different levels. The players that would benefit the most from this choice would be our attacking options who have lacked the killer instinct a striker needs.

Claudio Ranieri
-Current Sampdoria Manager Yes, that Claudio Ranieri. The manager that made a whole city believe and the whole sport of soccer believe. If you don’t know already, Claudio Ranieri lead Leicester City FC to a Premier League title in one season with a squad that was struggling in the relegation battle the previous season. So with 10,000 to 1 odds, why shouldn’t the Los Angeles Galaxy try to get a manager that can turn a team around a full 180.

Eric Wynalda
-Former Las Vegas Lights/New Amsterdam Manager Out of all my choices, this one has to be some kind of a wild card. Eric Wynalda was a part of the beginnings of the MLS and like Robbie Keane, he had that killer instinct a striker needs. His overall record after one season in charge with the Las Vegas Lights was 11 wins, 8 draws, and 15 losses. Probably not the best option along side all these candidates, but Wynalda understands how the MLS works and what is expected for a team to succeed in this league.

Jill Ellis -Former USWNT Manager and 2 time World Cup Champion The most decorated candidate in this list, but one that probably also would not work out. There is no denying her well earned resume and honors, the only thing is that Ellis was blessed to have such a strong USWNT squad 2 world cups in a row. This would be a good challenge for her career as this time she would be able to flex her tactical genius with a squad that lacks excitement and star power. Although, her style is very similar to what Guillermo has tried to do with a 4-3-3, which asks a lot of the wingbacks and attacking wingers.

Let me know which manager above is the one you would go with to succeed Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Don’t like the options, who would you like to see manage the Los Angeles Galaxy?

  1. I think you could add Miguel “el piojo” Herrera to the list if you could get him from America. Fiery, passionate coach that seems to get the best out of his players…I know he wouldn’t hold back calling out guys that aren’t giving their all, regardless of the name on the back of the jersey

    1. This would be an interesting choice! This would put the Galaxy in the soccer public eye around the world. But this could also end just as it has with Chicharito, a commercial grab in a sense.
